Private Aerospace Company, and Crewed Launch provider, Space X, today, alongside inspiration4.com, announced the first fully civilian commercial launch of human Astronauts to Low Earth Orbit.
The mission, aptly titled "Inspiration-4", was initiated by philanthropist and CEO, Jared Isaacman, as an inspiration campaign to gain awareness & fundraise for the St. Judes Children Hospital. Commanded by Isaacman himself, the flight will feature a total Crew of four civilians. Two Crew members, which Inspiration4.com deems "Generosity & Prosperity", are being selected from the General Public via the Inspiration4.com selection contest The Contest gives participants the option to either donate directly to St. Jude's (Generosity) as an entry, or kickstart a Shift4Shop online store (Prosperity) as the other possible form of entry. The fourth seat, which is TBA, belongs to a female representative from St. Judes with direct ties to the mission.
Beginning with an official NBC Nightly News announcement tonight at 6:30pm EST with Isaacman and Space X CEO, Elon Musk, Inspiration-4 will be a roughly year long campaign, with a prime-time ad premiering at Super Bowl LV, Public Crew selections announced in March, and a scheduled late 2021 Launch into Orbit. Set to fly NET Quarter 4 of this year, prior to the previously announced Axiom Space mission to the International Space Station, Inspiration
will fly onboard of the Space X Crew Dragon "Resilience" spacecraft, which is currently in orbit on station or the Crew-1 mission, and be launched by a Falcon 9 launch vehicle from historic LC-39A, Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
Crews selected will receive thorough commercial Astronaut training directly from Space X, headquartered in Hawthorne, California, and be educated in areas such as "the Falcon 9 launch vehicle and Dragon spacecraft, orbital mechanics, operating in microgravity, zero gravity, and other forms of stress testing". The mission profile is set to be a “multi-day journey, orbiting Earth every 90 minutes along a customized flight path” & is set to conclude with a procedural splash-down off the Florida coast.
