Yesterday evening at 7:13pm EDT, United Launch Alliance launched their heaviest Atlas V rocket into the golden light on Florida's Space Coast. The Atlas V launched from Space Launch Complex 41 (SLC-41) in its 551 configuration with 5 Solid Rocket Boosters to loft the heavy AFSPC-11 satellite into its Geostationary Orbit.
There were two spacecraft that were launched on this mission, CBAS and EAGLE. CBAS stands for Continuous Broadcast Augmenting SATCOM and EAGLE stands for ESPA Augmented GEO Laboratory Experiment. The purpose for CBAS is to augment existing satellite communication capabilities and to broadcast military data through space-based satellite communications relay links. EAGLE is a platform that is to demonstrate a maneuverable space vehicle which can carrying six deployable payloads in Geostationary Orbit and can be cost effectively replicated for multi-payload missions.
