One Giant Leap for (Wo)mankind: First All Female Spacewalk FINALLY Happens!

Earlier this year, everyone was buzzing about the first all female spacewalk. Due to not having the correct size suit it was cancelled, causing major disappointment to those ready for the groundbreak...but that is all about to change.

Today is the day.

Today is when NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir step out (in two appropriately sized suits, may I add) and take part in the first all female spacewalk. Over the weekend a power controller had failed, so these awesome ladies are going to fix it (hashtag girl power). The 221st spacewalk since 1998 when the International Space Station first started assembly will be about five and a half hours long.

Kathy Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space in 1984, said in an email to CBS News, “It's a sign of the slowly growing number of women in the astronaut corps...The occasional woman as a bit of a novelty on a crew or a spacewalk or on a mission control console is giving way to the normalcy of more gender-diverse teams in all these arenas and women regularly taking on high-stakes tasks and leadership roles”.

So for all you ladies out there, for all the little girls who dream of going to space and doing big things, and for all of humankind, there are big strides being made for history today. Most importantly, they’re being made by women.
